Arguably the largest cattle producer in Orange County, David Pope’s days are jam-packed with full-time farming activities. Together with his father, David manages close to 300 momma cows on eight different farms that he either owns or leases. In addition, he oversees robust hay and organic tobacco operations.
David grew up farming, got his first herd of cattle when he graduated from high school, and has been in the business ever since. He loves working cattle and does most, if not all, of his own veterinary work, something he considers a key to his success. He also credits the fact that he was able to start out farming on family-owned land and slowly acquire more as farmers in his area aged-out. While most of his Angus-based herd is sold as calves through traditional market channels, David has adapted his operation to finish cattle for Firsthand Foods.
