The Wallace’s farm is a model mid-scale pasture-based operation with extensive woodlots and pastures for their hogs to graze, root, wallow and nest the way nature intended. David and Melissa are a formidable and energetic husband-wife team with a shared passion for farming, an innovative attitude, and a strong commitment to humane care of their animals.
Hogs, Wheat Straw, Non-GMO Corn & Soybeans
David takes the lead on all of their field crop production and the installation and maintenance of hog fencing, waterers, and huts. Melissa (and son, Darren), oversee care of the sows to ensure they are well-fed, have sufficient wheat straw for bedding and can farrow (i.e., give birth) without interference or complication. Melissa keeps careful records of sow productivity and has set up a tracking system to keep an eye on hogs that are likely to mature into good mothers. David’s brother, Chasten, manages the “top hogs” that are weaned and ultimately headed to market.
