For David and Beth, raising livestock is a relatively new endeavor inspired by their move to Oxford and ownership stake in Bull City Burger and Brewery, a Durham restaurant featuring Firsthand Foods’ pasture-raised beef, pork & lamb.
Beef Cattle, Lamb
David is the self-proclaimed creative on their team and gravitates toward managing the beef herd. Beth takes the lead on operations and is in charge of the sheep. David spends most of his time on the farm while Beth works at Duke University managing clinical surgical trials. Both are passionate about wisely using their resources, improving their pastures and raising delicious food. When they first started out, they made the mistake of managing their pastures as a monocrop but have since learned the importance of forage diversity both for the health of their animals and the soil. Being able to graze beef and lamb in rotation is a huge asset that helps to control weeds, provide nutrients and promote biodiversity.
