Cheryl and Bernie have invested everything – savings, time and daily hard work – to realize their dream of owning a viable commercial-scale livestock operation. They began years ago, when Cheryl worked for a local veterinary practice and Bernie was employed by the American Tobacco Company. Year by year, they built their herd and reclaimed land that had been in their family for over 85 years.
Today they farm full-time, raising beef and hogs on pasture, growing their own barley, oats and corn for feed, selling meat off their farm, and continuously exploring opportunities to improve the efficiency of their operation and the quality of their product. In a win-win relationship with a nearby brewery (Natty Green’s), they are able to make use of spent brewer’s grains as a supplemental feed. For their investment in infrastructure to protect woodlands and waterways, the Pryors won the 2011 NC Cattlemen’s Association’s Environmental Stewardship Award.
