Farmer Spotlight: James West

by firsthandfoods on August 19, 2013

At Firsthand Foods, we are proud to know our great and hardworking farmers. Our great pork farmer, James West, enjoys Eastern NC BBQ and playing with his 1952 Doole truck. Take a minute to get to know him yourself!

 What are your favorite hobbies?

Working is my hobby. I do have a 1952 Dodge truck I play with.

Where would you go for your dream vacation?

I want to see Alaska.

What is your favorite meat dish? Is it a family recipe?

Eastern NC BBQ and grilled Boston Butt steaks. I still wood cook BBQ and use homemade vinegar sauce.

The average age of farmers in the US is 52 and very few young people are going into agriculture. What ideas do you have for encouraging the next generation to get involved in farming. Are you currently involved in working with youth? If so, how?

I take time to show my children and my cousin’s son how to really take care of hogs. I also encourage my children to be involved with our watermelon crop.

If you have kids, do they still help out on the farm? If not, what are they doing?

The two youngest help with the hogs and watermelons. The oldest is my nurse for the pigs. She gives shots, helps castrate and takes care of the sows after farrowing.

Anything else you would like us to share? Any quirky facts?

Isn’t raising hogs quirky enough?
